Frequently Asked Questions

  • The filing deadline is April 15, 2026. If you need more time, you can request an automatic six-month extension, which moves your filing deadline to October 15, 2026. However, an extension to file is not an extension to pay—any taxes owed must still be paid by April 15 to avoid interest and penalties.

  • The Standard Deduction has been increased for 2025 to account for inflation:

    • Single or Married Filing Separately: $15,000

    • Married Filing Jointly: $30,000

    • Head of Household: $22,500 Most W-2 filers find that the Standard Deduction is higher than their total itemized deductions, making the filing process much simpler.

  • Employers are required to send W-2s by January 31, 2026. If you haven't received yours by mid-February, first contact your employer’s HR or payroll department to ensure they have your correct address. If you still cannot obtain it, you can contact the IRS at 800-829-1040; they will contact the employer for you and provide you with a form to estimate your earnings.

  • Yes. If you paid interest on a qualified student loan in 2025, you can deduct up to $2,500 of that interest, even if you do not itemize your deductions. This is considered an "above-the-line" deduction. You should receive Form 1098-E from your loan servicer if you paid more than $600 in interest.

  • For 2025, the contribution limit for a Traditional or Roth IRA is $7,000. If you are age 50 or older, you can contribute an additional "catch-up" amount of $1,000, for a total of $8,000. You have until April 15, 2026, to make these contributions and have them count toward the 2025 tax year.

  • Yes. For the 2025 tax year, the Child Tax Credit is generally $2,000 per qualifying child under age 17. A portion of this credit is "refundable," meaning you may receive it as a refund even if you owe zero taxes. Ensure your dependents meet the residency and support requirements before claiming.

  • IRS Direct File is a new, free service that allows eligible taxpayers to file their federal returns directly with the IRS. For the 2025 tax season (filing in 2026), the program is expected to expand to more states. It is specifically designed for W-2 filers with simple tax situations. Check IRS.gov in early 2026 to see if your state is participating.

  • Yes. All income is taxable. If you earned more than $400 from self-employment (even if it was just a few weekend gigs), you must report it on Schedule C. You may also receive a Form 1099-K or 1099-NEC if you were paid via apps like Venmo or PayPal or worked as a contractor.

  • The IRS typically issues most refunds within 21 calendar days of receiving an electronically filed return. To get your refund as fast as possible, you should e-file and choose direct deposit. Paper returns and mailed checks can take 6 to 12 weeks or longer.

  • At the federal level, there is no longer a penalty for not having health insurance. However, you should still keep your Form 1095-B or 1095-C for your records. Note: If you live in certain states (like California, Massachusetts, or New Jersey), there may still be a state-level mandate and penalty for not having coverage.
